In 1998, the Working Group for Indigenous Minorities in Southern Africa (WIMSA) agreed that the San needed assistance in training their own people to deal with tourism and how to showcase San culture to the world. In 1999, guided by her vision and inspired by heritage centres in America and Canada, she bought a small farm on the West Coast of South Africa for the !Khwa ttu project, namely a San Culture and Education Centre. The farm is held in perpetuity by the Meerkat Non-Profit Company for the sole use of the !Khwa ttu project, and can only be used as a San Culture and Education Centre. Our work at !Khwa ttu gives us the opportunity to help make a difference to the lives of the San, to the environment near us and to offer our guests memorable experiences. We will continue to play a role to work towards making !Khwa ttu a sustainable project that brings in enough income to support itself, to create further training opportunities for many other needy San and to support initiatives so we will have a continuous impact on the conservation of our land and the environment. providing training to the San in life skills, entrepreneurship, tourism, health, community development and gender issues. restoring and protecting the cultural heritage of the San as contained in their history, folklore, visual arts, cosmology and language. promoting the long-term financial sustainability of San development in southern Africa. At !Khwa ttu we share with our visitors authentic interactions, inspiring San guided tours, good food, compelling art and photography exhibitions, and professional friendly hospitality. We offer our San students a safe learning environment and share with them appropriately designed training in sustainable tourism, culture, heritage, nature and general life skills, in order to support them in becoming San ambassadors and following their chosen career path. The !Khwa ttu San Culture and Education Centre is a centre of San culture and heritage that provides tailor-made training for young San women and men of Southern Africa. Tourism is one of the fastest-growing industries in Southern Africa. San communities have expressed their intention to participate in modern development. Basically, they wish to give their children the chance to revitalise the traditional life supported by tourism revenues, and get the necessary skills to enter the modern workforce and live in dignity. In fact, over the years, the San have been and still are exploited by the tourist industry and various commercial enterprises who have ruthlessly capitalised on their appearance, arts, crafts and cultural identity. Very little has been received by San communities in terms of acknowledgement and payment for our people’s work and knowledge. UBUNTU Foundation made available funds for the renovation of the entire site and has since generously supported the project. !Khwa ttu boosts the social and economic well-being of San communities in Southern Africa through the development of successful and sustainable community and other tourism initiatives.
